Tractor Transmission Service Tips for Operators and Mechanics

We want to help you service your tractor transmission safely and efficiently. 

If you do not feel that you understand these steps, or can perform them safely, consult your tractor dealer or local mechanic.  Also always consult your tractor owner’s manual for model-specific information. 

Time to get started.

Here they are:

  • Thoroughly clean each part.
  • Dry all cleaned parts. 
  • Cleaning solvent will immediately degrade the new transmission fluid when the transmission is assembled.
  • Clean all sealant residue from the mating surfaces.
  • Protect the seals during the assembly of the transmission.
  • Use new seals and O-rings.
  • Use great care when working with aluminum parts.
  • Snap rings have a sharp side and a rounded side.  The sharp side faces in the direction that the thrust load is most likely to push it.
  • Clean all the sealant residue from the threaded holes in the transmission housing.
  • Keep track of all the fasteners.
  • Reuse the correct length bolts in the correct holes.
  • Do not force any parts together.
  • Do not use compressed air to spin bearings.
  • Use pry points to separate housings and do not damage the mating surface.
  • Replace worn fasteners and loose snap rings.
  • At each stage of assembly, test-spin parts.
  • Use lint-free rags.
  • Use transmission fluid to lubricate the bearings during assembly.
