Tractor PTO Secrets
There are several types of Power Take Off (PTO) for tractors, each with its own features and uses.
Here are the different types of PTOs:
- Transmission PTO: This is the simplest and earliest form of PTO, where the PTO shaft is directly connected to the tractor's transmission. The PTO only works when the tractor's clutch is released, so if you take the tractor out of gear while slowing down, the PTO will stop working. This is a disadvantage in applications such as mowing.
- Live PTO: A live PTO works with the use of a two-stage clutch. Pressing the clutch halfway will disengage the transmission, while pressing it fully will disengage the transmission and the PTO. This allows the operator to slow down or change gears while the PTO is still operating.
- Independent PTO: An independent PTO means that the PTO shaft is controlled with a separate clutch. As with a live PTO, this allows for full control over the tractor while separately controlling the PTO. There are two major types of independent PTO (Mechanical and Hydraulic).
- Economy PTO: This feature allows the operator to run the PTO at 540 rpm but at a lower engine rpm than the standard PTO rated speed. Economy PTO allows the tractor to operate at the required 540 rpm at the PTO but with lower engine rpm, which saves fuel, reduces vibration, and reduces noise. 540 economy is ideal for many applications, including mowing, baling, or tilling. The 540 economy setting cannot be used with full advertised PTO horsepower (hp) .
- Reverse PTO: This type of PTO is used to run the implement in the opposite direction. It is used for applications such as backhoe, post hole digger, and rotary cutter.
- Non-Shear PTO: This type of PTO is designed to protect the tractor and implement from damage caused by sudden stops or jams. It is commonly used in applications such as mowers, tillers, and rotary cutters.
- Shear Pin PTO: This type of PTO is designed to break or shear off when the implement encounters a sudden stop or jam. It is commonly used in applications such as mowers, tillers, and rotary cutters.
- Slip Clutch PTO: This type of PTO uses a friction clutch to slip when the implement encounters a sudden stop or jam. It is commonly used in applications such as mowers, tillers, and rotary cutters.
There are also different types of PTO activation methods, such as switch type and lever type.
Here are the most common applications:
- Transmission PTO: All common applications --- but not suitable for applications such as mowing.
- Live PTO: Ideal for applications that require a constant flow of PTO power, such as pumps, mowers, or snowblowers.
- Independent PTO: Mechanical independent PTO is suitable for applications such as mowers, tillers, and rotary cutters. Hydraulic independent PTO is more efficient than other PTOs, making it ideal for high-power applications such as large pumps or compressors.
- Economy PTO: Ideal for many applications including mowing, baling, or tilling.
- Reverse PTO: Used for applications such as backhoe, post hole digger, and rotary cutter.
- Non-Shear PTO: Used in applications such as mowers, tillers, and rotary cutters.
- Shear Pin PTO: Used in applications such as mowers, tillers, and rotary cutters.
- Slip Clutch PTO: Used in applications such as mowers, tillers, and rotary cutters.
It's important to note that the applications may vary depending on the specific manufacturer's design and the type of PTO activation method used.
