China’s 34% tariffs on U.S. farm goods—effective April 10, 2025—are hammering American farmers already battling inflation and low incomes. Soybeans, pork, and grains face export losses to China ($26 billion/year), while Canada’s 25% duties on potash and nitrogen drive fertilizer costs higher. Tractor prices, up 50% since 2020, add strain as net farm income declines for a third year.

“This trade war will force farms to close,” warn industry groups, citing bankruptcy risks. Farmers now scramble to hedge input costs and lobby for exemptions, but long-term damage looms. With Brazil poised to replace U.S. soybeans in China and food prices rising, the sector’s survival hinges on swift policy fixes.
