PTO Shaft Issues
There are several common issues that can arise with tractor PTO (Power Take-Off) shafts, along with ways to resolve them.
Compression Issues
Constant compression of the PTO shaft for extended periods can damage connections on the PTO, connecting shafts, implement, tractor, or bearings.
This can be fixed by shortening the PTO shaft length.
Wear and Tear
- PTO yoke ears or sides can become damaged from working at angles exceeding 45 degrees.
- Insufficient lubrication can cause wear on telescoping tubing/sections and shield bearings.
- Lubricate every 8 hours to prevent friction and wear.
Damaged or Broken Parts.
- Damage can occur to telescope tubes, cross-bearing arms, joints, and yokes.
- Ensure you are using the right PTO type for the job to avoid shock loads.
Clutch Issues
- Improper clutch adjustment or absence of a slip clutch can lead to PTO shaft failures.
- Use a slip clutch for jobs requiring continuous contact to absorb strikes.
PTO Shaft Binding
- PTO shafts that are too long can bind when the implement is raised and the shaft is compressed.
- Measure the distance with the implement level and ensure enough play to avoid binding.
- Shorten the shaft if needed.
Backing Up with PTO Engaged
- Driving away without disconnecting the PTO and then backing up can damage the shaft.
- Always disengage the PTO before moving the tractor.
To prevent issues, ensure the PTO shaft is the proper length, use the right PTO type for the job, maintain proper lubrication, and disengage the PTO before moving the tractor. Consult experts if problems persist to avoid further damage
