You can protect yourself from dust exposure by implementing various measures including...

  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  Wear a NIOSH approved and properly fitted N-95 or N-100 disposable particulate respirator when working in dusty areas to protect against dust, bacteria, fungi, insects, and other contaminants.
  • Ventilation and Dust Reduction.  Avoid working in dusty places in confined space areas.  Ventilate areas to mechanically remove air contaminants. When cleaning barns or stables, lightly water areas to reduce the risk of airborne dust.
  • Respirator Selection.  Select a respirator approved by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) with a protection factor (PF) rating of 10 or above for farming activities.
  • General Health Practices.  Maintain good overall health with a balanced diet, proper rest, and exercise habits.
  • Education and Training.  Receive proper safety training and education to increase awareness of hazards and risks associated with dust exposure.
  • Implementation of Control Measures.  Implement control measures to reduce dust exposure, such as using appropriate ventilation and respiratory protection.

It's important for you to be aware of the specific hazards present in your work environment and to take appropriate steps to minimize your exposure to agricultural dust.
