Tractor safety is important to prevent accidents and injuries while operating a tractor.

Here are some tips on how to practice tractor safety:

  • Always mount and dismount on a tractor's left side to avoid controls.
  • Ensure an approved cab or roll-over protective structure (ROPS) is installed.
  • Use flashing amber light for towing on roads.
  • Use rear tail and work lights, mudguards, and side light.
  • Use posture designed seat, manual over-ride power steering, and maximum visibility.
  • Use hazard warning decals, hydraulic power for heavy lifting, and three-point hitch to prevent back-flipping.
  • Use a protective PTO shaft cover and PTO shield.
  • The only safe place to sit on a tractor is in the driver's seat.
  • Firmly attach the seat belt.
  • Always start and stop the tractor slowly.
  • Drive slowly and be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Test the brakes each time the tractor is put into motion after start-up.
  • Never allow drivers to take along a passenger.
  • Avoid driving the tractor on steep slopes.
  • Keep children away from tractors and machinery.
  • Keep all guards in place, including power take-off and master shield guards.
  • Do not carry passengers unless there is a designated seat and seat belt within the ROPS.
  • Start the tractor from the driving position and not from the ground.
  • Do not step down from a moving tractor.
  • Ensure the park brake is on and operating effectively before exiting.
  • Remove the starting key when the tractor is not in use.

It is important to read the manufacturer's operating instructions and complete the necessary specialist training before driving a tractor for the first time. Refreshing your knowledge is also important if it has been a while since you have driven a tractor.

Additionally, it is best for new drivers to get behind-the-wheel instruction by an expert operator.
