Prolonged tariffs on agricultural goods are reshaping global trade, with lasting consequences for U.S. farmers and food security.

China’s 34% tariffs on American soybeans, pork, and grains—coupled with Canada and Mexico’s retaliatory duties—threaten to permanently displace U.S. products in key markets.

During the 2018–2019 trade war, $27 billion in U.S. farm exports vanished as China turned to Brazilian suppliers, a shift now accelerating under renewed tensions.

Brazil and Argentina are poised to dominate soybean and grain exports to Asia and Europe, while Canada and Mexico seek alternatives to U.S. corn and meat. Tariffs on Canadian potash (critical for U.S. crops) have doubled fertilizer costs, while equipment prices surged 50% since 2020. Net farm income has declined for three consecutive years, with 20% tied to exports. Rising debts and operational costs could force closures.

Retaliatory tariffs make U.S. goods less competitive: China’s total soybean tariffs could hit 71.5%, and pork faces 99% duties. Meanwhile, Latin American regions gain export opportunities as U.S. market share shrinks.

Uncertain Future

Policy volatility stifles investment, with farmers hesitant to plan amid trade chaos. “The economic strain has reached a breaking point,” warned National Farmers Union President Rob Larew. Without swift diplomatic solutions, the U.S. risks irreversible damage to its agricultural influence and rural economies.
