How to Maintain Your PTO
There are key steps to maintain a PTO (power take-off).
Perform initial maintenance within the first 24-48 hours of use. This includes checking for leaks, re-torquing hardware, and verifying fluid levels in the transmission and hydraulic system.
Conduct weekly visual inspections to check for signs of wear, leaks, and that hoses/wires are secured properly and not rubbing against other components.
Grease the PTO shaft and universal joints regularly, typically after every 8 hours of use or annually if used infrequently. Disassemble the telescoping members, grease the shafts and joints, and reinstall the safety guards.
Inspect the PTO gears and bearings periodically, either by removing an inspection cover or fully removing the PTO from the transmission. Replace any worn or damaged components.
Perform maintenance on the PTO in conjunction with regular servicing of the vehicle, such as oil changes. This helps ensure the PTO is properly maintained.
Listen for any changes in the normal operating sounds of the PTO, as this can indicate an issue that requires further inspection.
For PTO-driven generators, the only regular maintenance typically required is greasing the bearings and changing the gearbox oil.
The key is to establish a routine maintenance schedule based on the PTO's usage and application, and to always prioritize safety by ensuring guards are in place.
