How Do I Replace My Yanmar Tractor Fuel Filter?

We want to help you replace your Yanmar tractor fuel filter. 

If you do not feel that you understand these steps, or can perform them safely, consult your tractor dealer or local mechanic. 

Time to get started.

CAUTION:  

• Diesel fuel is flammable and explosive under certain conditions.
• When you remove any fuel system component to perform maintenance (such as changing the fuel filter), place an approved container under the opening to catch the fuel.
• Never use a shop rag to catch the fuel.  Vapors from the rag are flammable and explosive.
• Wipe up any spills immediately.
• Wear eye protection.  The fuel system is under pressure and fuel could spray out when you remove any fuel system component.
• Failure to comply will result in death or serious injury.

NOTE:

• Always be environmentally responsible.
• Follow the guidelines of the EPA or other governmental agencies for the proper disposal of hazardous materials such as engine oil, diesel fuel and engine coolant.  Consult the local authorities or reclamation facility.
• Never dispose of hazardous materials irresponsibly by dumping them into a sewer, on the ground, or into ground water or waterways.
• Failure to follow these procedures may seriously harm the environment.

For maximum engine life, YANMAR recommends that when shutting the engine down, you allow the engine to idle, without load, for five minutes.  This will allow the engine components that operate at high temperatures, such as the turbocharger (if equipped) and exhaust system, to cool slightly before the engine itself is shut down.

Replace the fuel filter at specified intervals to prevent contaminants from adversely affecting the diesel fuel flow.

Here are steps to replacing your Yanmar fuel filter:

• Stop the engine and allow it to cool.
• Close the fuel cock of the fuel filter/water separator.
• Turn the retaining ring (Figure 5-13, (1)) to the left (Figure 5-13, (2)).

• Carefully remove the cup (Figure 5-13, (3)) and pour the fuel into an approved container and dispose of the waste properly.  Hold the bottom of the cup with a shop towel to prevent the fuel from dripping.  Wipe up any spills immediately.
• Remove the element (Figure 5-13, (4)) by pulling it down.
• Replace the element with a new one.

• Wash the inside of the cup with clean fuel.
• Check the condition of the cup 0-ring (Figure 5-13, (6)).  Replace it if necessary.
• Reinstall the cup to the mounting flange and turn the retaining ring (Figure 5-13, (1)) to the right (Figure 5-13, (2)).  Hand-tighten only.
• Open the fuel cock of the fuel filter/water separator.
• Prime the fuel system.
• Check for fuel leaks.
