Preparation Before the Auction

Research and Set a Budget.  Familiarize yourself with current market prices by checking USDA livestock reports and local auction results.  This helps you establish a baseline price for the animals you are interested in, preventing overbidding.

Know What You Want.  Define your goals regarding the type and breed of livestock you need.  This clarity will help you stay focused during the auction and avoid impulse purchases.

Register for a Bidder Number.  Upon arrival at the auction, register at the Sale Office to obtain a bidder number.  This number identifies you during the bidding process.

Strategies During the Auction

Observe Experienced Bidders.  Watch how seasoned farmers bid and which animals they select.  This can provide insights into quality livestock and help you avoid poor purchases.

Be Cautious of Low Starting Bids.  Extremely low starting prices may indicate underlying issues with the animals.  Use caution and investigate further before placing a bid.

Bid Wisely.  Raise your hand to bid when the auctioneer calls a price.  Be mindful of your budget and avoid getting caught up in the excitement of bidding wars.  Stick to your predetermined limits.

Inspect Animals Thoroughly.  Look for signs of health and quality in the livestock.  Check for any visible issues like limping, respiratory problems, or poor overall condition.  Healthy animals are a better long-term investment.

After the Auction

Payment and Pickup.  Be prepared to pay immediately after winning a bid, typically via cash or check.  Ensure you have appropriate transportation ready for your livestock, as many auctions require immediate pickup.

Follow-Up Care.  Once you’ve purchased your livestock, have a plan for their care, including shelter, food, and veterinary needs. This is crucial for their health and your investment.

With these guidelines implemented, you can navigate livestock auctions effectively and find good deals on healthy animals.
