Purchase heaters that have been safety tested and UL approved.  Look for features like emergency tip-over shut-off and heating element guards.

Carefully read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and warning labels before using the heater.

Keep heaters at least three feet away from combustible materials such as curtains, furniture, and bedding.

Place heaters on a level, hard, non-flammable surface.  Avoid placing them on carpets, furniture, or countertops.

Avoid placing heaters in high-traffic areas or doorways where they can be a tripping hazard.

Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet. Do not use extension cords or power strips, as they can overheat and cause fires.

Avoid plugging the heater into the same circuit as other electrical appliances to prevent overloading.

Inspect heaters for any damage, such as cracked plugs or frayed cords, before each use.  Do not use the heater if it is damaged.

Ensure the heater is clean and in good condition before use.

Never leave a space heater unattended.  Turn it off when leaving the room or going to sleep.

Keep children and pets away from the heater to prevent accidental burns or shocks.

Avoid using electric heaters in damp or wet areas unless they are specifically designed for such environments.

Install smoke alarms on every floor and outside all sleeping areas, and test them monthly.

Use space heaters only for supplemental heating.  Do not use them to thaw pipes, cook food, or dry clothing.

By adhering to these best practices, you can significantly reduce the risks associated with using electric heaters.
