8 Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Tractor Running Smooth
We want to teach you 8 tips to maintain your tractor to keep it running great.
If you do not feel that you understand these tips, or can perform them safely, consult your tractor dealer, owner’s manual, or local mechanic.
To keep your tractor running great, you must take care of it. This includes regular maintenance.
Regular maintenance will keep the tractor running well, plus it will increase its longevity. Many last 10-15 years or longer.
Here are 8 maintenance tips to help keep your tractor running great:
Visual Inspection: Conduct a regular visual inspection every time you use the tractor. Check for leaks, dirt buildups, lights, or any other issues. Also make sure that the hazard lights and safety indicators are in the proper working position.
Tractor Fluid: All fluids need to be checked regularly. Make sure to check engine, transmission, hydraulic, and brake oils, as they need periodic replacement. Contaminated oil will cause vast damage.
Air Filter: Air filters accumulate a lot of dust. Dirty or clogged air filters reduce tractor life. Check your air filter every 50 hours. Clean it or even replace it if needed. Also be sure to wipe the dust off the engine’s fan blades regularly.
Battery: If your tractor sits idle, the battery will likely discharge. This could burden the alternator or cause engine failure. The low battery can be revived with a high voltage battery charger. Make sure to also examine all electrical connections and check for wire cracks. Keep in mind that a healthy battery reduces the excess load on the alternator.
Noise Check: Start the engine. Listen to the sound and note any abnormal noises including knocking or thumping. Also listen for grinding and gurgling noises in the transmission when it changes gears. Abnormal sounds are an indication that maintenance is due.
Radiator Fluid: You may gradually lose fluid due to the regular use of the tractor. Many times, if you lose a significant amount of fluid, there is a built-in indicator. Regardless, you need to check your radiator fluid regularly.
Air pressure: At a minimum, check your tire pressure weekly. Air pressure gets reduced with usage. Therefore, air must be refilled to avoid tire damage and high fuel consumption. Tires lose air faster in the cold winter months.
Regular Servicing: Service your tractor at the regular intervals as specified by the manufacturer. Get your tractor serviced at the authorized dealer or service center. Make sure they use genuine parts and provide quality service.
Follow these 8 tips, and your tractor should perform great for many years. This will also save you repair costs and loss of productivity.
